“The lawyer is a public service, the administration of justice” – Manila Bulletin

Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo on Friday, September 2, said the ultimate purpose of the legal profession “has always been and always will be the public service and the administration of justice.”

Gesmundo also told the first batch of law students at the recently inaugurated Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) Law School in Baler, Aurora Province, that the profession of a lawyer “is a service to others in need of justice, and service to others in search of truth.”

The Chief Justice was the guest of honor at the inauguration.

He reiterated the Supreme Court’s (SC) challenge to law schools “to make legal education more relevant to the times and to the needs of society.”

He said the SC had begun to reorient legal education with the enactment of the Revised Law Student Rule of Practice, which was created to achieve the dual goals of geographically expanding access to justice and producing competent and ready-to-practise lawyers.

He noted that the Legal Education Board has since implemented the Revised Model Curriculum which shifts the emphasis of legal education from simply passing bar exams or being “bar-centric” to ” preparation for practice” or to ensure that law students are fully equipped with the knowledge and skills required of lawyers.

“I am happy to hear that ASCOT College of Law also aims to produce lawyers who will be committed to serving the Filipino people,” he said.

“Indeed, this is a good time to open a law school. We are at the crossroads of innovation and tradition, technology and convention. And what better school to open a law school than a school with a good foundation in technology,” he added.

The SC Public Information Office (PIO) said ASCOT, the only government-funded state college in Aurora Province, has obtained a license from the Legal Education Board to operate the first law school from Aurora.

Also in Aurora Province, on Friday, September 2, Chief Justice Gesmundo led the inauguration of the Baler Courthouses.

In his message to judges and court staff, Gesmundo expressed his belief that courthouses will give court officials and staff enough structure to meet their needs.

With the Chief Justice at the inauguration, in addition to the magistrate court officials and staff, were SC PIO Chief Brian Keith F. Hosaka and Baler Regional Magistrate Court Judge Enrico Voltaire P. Rivera.
